Article Snippet: Pelvic floor dysfunction can occur in several conditions, including pelvic organ prolapse, stress urinary incontinence, and fecal incontinence, and can considerably impair the quality of life.1 Vaginal delivery has been demonstrated to be an important risk factor for the development of pelvic floor dysfunction, with levator ani muscle (LAM) injury during vaginal delivery as the major contributing factor.2– 4 Recent studies have reported a high occurrence of LAM defects in 16%– 41% of women after their first vaginal delivery.4– 6 Therefore, accurate evaluation of the structure and function of LAM might assist in clinical rehabilitation and treatment after delivery and prevent pelvic floor dysfunction.. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with an excellent softtissue contrast has been increasingly proposed as an auxiliary diagnostic tool in the assessment of LAM injury.. It can be used efficiently to evaluate the morphology and function of the pelvic floor.7,8 Both static and dynamic MRI scans provide an excellent qualitative evaluation of LAM. |
